Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is usually extremely distressing and sometimes incapacitating, interfering with work, family and interpersonal relationships. Traditional psychotherapy is ineffective in treating OCD.

OCD can usually be effectively treated in an outpatient treatment modality. The recommended treatment involves a combination of behavioral therapy (Exposure with Response Prevention) with medication as required. In cases where symptoms are more severe, after failing to improve significantly through traditional outpatient treatment, or simply when intensive therapy is preferred, referral to the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic Intensive Outpatient Program is indicated.

The OCD Intensive Outpatient treatment programs provide group, individual and family therapy in a concentrated manner, 3 hours daily, 3 days per week. The average length of treatment at the intensive treatment program is 4 to 6 weeks. Clients work closely with program therapists on behavioral exposures to the feared obsessions. Clients learn to work on their own as they progress with exposures to acquire the ability to work without the direct support of a therapist, to perform homework exposures and follow-up with less intensive outpatient treatment. Intensive treatment programs meet Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

Cognitive behavioral therapy, often combined with medication treatment, is the most effective therapy for OCD. The OCD IOP is committed to coordinating care with community therapists while clients are in the program and as they transition back to therapists upon completion of the program.
